প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধের পর ১৯২০ থেকে ১৯৩০ সাল এই দশবছর রবীন্দ্রনাথ বহুবার ইউরোপীয় দেশগুলি পরিভ্রমন করেছেন ।
১৯২৫ এবং ১৯২৬ সালে তিনি ইটালি ভ্রমন করেন । প্রথমে বিভ্রান্ত হলেও পরে তিনি The character of the Fascist movement –য়ের আসল রূপ চিনতে পারেন ।
"Tagore's letter to the Manchester Guardian,
5 August 1926"
এই দীর্ঘ চিঠিতে সেই সময়েই তিনি আবারো রূঢ় রাষ্ট্রযন্ত্রের বিরুদ্ধে তাঁর বক্তব্য রাখেন। তিনি লিখেছেন,
"I have said over and over again that the aggressive spirit of nationalism and imperialism, religiously cultivated by most of the nations of the West, is a menace to the whole world .
The demoralization that it produces in European politics is sure to have disastrous effects, especially upon the peoples of the East, who are helpless to exploit the western methods of exploitation. It would be most foolish, if it were not almost criminal, to express my admiration for a political ideal which openly declares its loyalty to brute force as the motive power of Civilization. That barbarism is not altogether incompatible with material prosperity may be taken for granted, but the cost is terribly great ; indeed it is fatal . The work of unscrupulous force as the vehicle of nationalism keeps ignited the fire of international jealously, and makes for universal incendiarism, for a fearful orgy of devastation ."
কী ভয়ঙ্কর ভবিষ্যৎবাণী !
সুচতুর ইউরোপীয় দেশগুলি, ব্যবসায়ী স্বার্থে বিশ শতকের সেই জাতিতাত্ত্বিক রাষ্ট্রচিন্তার বিষ- মেশানো মাদক তাদেরই পুরাতন কলোনিগুলির মুখে ঢেলে চলেছে,সঙ্গে অস্ত্রের উন্মাদনা। বানিজ্য, বানিজ্য, শোষন শোষন !
পরোক্ষে আবারো অর্থনৈতিক সাম্রাজ্যবাদ !
