La Pieta
Incomparable Marble sculpture of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary at mound Golgotha which represents the 'Sixth sorrow' of the blessed Virgin Mary, by Michel Anjelo Buonarroti. This great creation is now in Saint Peter's Basilica, Vatican City.
La Pieta, one of the greatest works of the Renaissance in Italy. The lifeless body of Christ which Virgin Mary cradling on her lap. The sculpture reflects the classical principle and balance and harmony with a compelling and naturalistic portrayal of both fingers.
This portrayal is of the Mother's Sixth Sorrow. When the Crucification ended Jesus was pierced in the side with a spear, outletting stream of blood and then placed in the arms of His Mother who endured such deadly pain as she had no tears to shade. This stonified tears is the (La Madona della Pieta) Pieta.
Today, 25th December is the holy Christmas. We remember the Divine Arrival of Jesus, embodiment of love and forgiveness. But we must not forget The Holy Mother's pain which was borne not only by the Virgin Mary but also is , till being endured by the "Universal Famine that holds us above."
